Objetivos/Aims:
Es objetivo de esta asignatura ofrecer nociones fundamentales sobre la evolución de la literatura inglesa desde el siglo XVIII hasta nuestros días, así como sobre el contexto histórico, social y estético en el que se produjeron. También se persigue que los alumnos comenten en clase los textos literarios seleccionados a tal fin. Las clases, los ejercicios y los exámenes serán en inglés.
This survey course aims at providing students with a working knowledge of the evolution of English literature since the Restoration to the present, as well as of the social, aesthetic and historical background for each literary period. It also seeks to encourage students to put forward their views on the literary texts selected for class discussion. Lectures, seminars, written papers and final examinations will be in English.

Eighteenth-century English Literature (The Augustan Age: Pope and

Novel. The Age of Blake and the Pre-Romantic Poetry).

English Literature of the Romantic Period (General Introduction. The
“Preface” to Lyrical Ballads.
Wordsworth & Coleridge. Byron, Shelley and Keats. The Fiction of the
Romantic Period: Austen & Scott.)
3.
Victorian Literature (The Victorian Age. Victorian Prose.
Victorian Poetry. Victorian Fiction. The 1890s)
4. Early Twentieth-century Literature (Poetry: The Edwardian and Georgian Poetry. The First World War Poetry. Yeats. McDiarmid. The Auden Group. Thomas. Fiction: Modernist Fiction. Non-Modernist Fiction. Drama: Shaw. The Irish Renaissance. English Drama)
5. English Literature since 1950 (Drama: Beckett. Osborne. Other Playwrights. Poetry: Larkin. Hughes. Heaney. Fiction: The Novel in the 1950s. Postmodernism and Postcolonialism).
Evaluación/Grading:
50% Examen escrito.
10% Asistencia a clase (se controlará en el aula y mediante la entrega de los resúmenes previos a la clase).
40% Participación en las tutorías y los comentarios de texto realizados en clase. Si no puede asistir a una sesión, se aceptará un breve ensayo siempre y cuando se entregue antes de la fecha o clase señalada para la realización de dicho seminario.
Los ALUMNOS REPETIDORES podrán elegir entre UN EXAMEN FINAL (100%) ó unirse a las clases ECTS.
50% - Written exam.
10% - Class attendance (controlled by teacher in classrooms and by submitting short summaries before lectures).
40% - Participation in tutorials and class discussion (40%). If you cannot attend a certain session, a short essay will be accepted as long as it is submitted no later than the appointed date/class for each seminar.
REPEATING STUDENTS may choose between grading by final examination, or joining the ECTS classes.
